Erythrocyte metabolism is unique in that the
mature erythrocyte contains no mitochondria and therefore
no Kreb's cycle! Instead the energy needs of the RBC are met
largely (95%) by anaerobic glycolysis in the
pathway.
The shunt supplies the remainder.
