Welcome to the section on benign white cell disorders. We
will begin with a discussion of disorders where there are
either too few (leukocytopenia) or too many (leukocytosis)
white cells in comparison to the expected normal number.
Remember, the normal adult peripheral WBC count or
leukocyte count is 4.5-11.0 x 10 /L.
When the WBCc increases or decreases it is the absolute
number of the individual components (the neutrophils, the
eosinophils, the basophils, the monocytes, and the
lymphocytes) that is critical to discovering the cause of
the abnormal WBC count.
In the section we will look at decreases in white cell
number or leukopenia.
