Esophageal Cancer

40 year old male with newly diagnosed esophageal cancer. PET/CT ordered for staging.

There is markedly increased FDG activity (maximum SUV 8.7 and average SUV 5.8) within a 5 cm mass involving the distal esophagus, spanning the GE junction with involvement of the gastric cardia consistent with known esophageal cancer. There was also increased activity (maximum SUV of 4.4 with an average SUV of 3.7) with a celiac region lymph node compatible with metastatic nodal disease.
