Basics of GU Anatomy

The kidneys are retroperitoneal organs that function in electrolyte homeostasis and waste excretion, emptying medially into the ureters, which course inferiorly into the pelvis and enter the urinary bladder, where the urine is temporarily stored until it is cleared to the exterior through the urethra. The adrenal, or suprarenal glands are related to the kidneys more by proximity than function, producing steroids (cortex) and catecholamines (medulla).
