Clerkship - Psychiatric Medicine

The students on the Psychiatric Medicine clerkship will spend a total of six weeks in one of 4 locales: University of Virginia, Western State Hospital in Staunton, Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center or the Carilion Roanoke Health System.

 

Clerkship Objectives

 

  • To develop proficiency in performing a mental status examination.
  • To recognize psychiatric conditions and begin to practice skills in diagnosis and treatment.
  • To recognize that psychiatric and behavioral skills are essential in effectively working with their patients of all disciplines.
  • To develop the proficiency of the students' personal and professional knowledge of how psychiatric and behavioral principals can aid in establishing rapport, rendering service, and achieving compliance with patients.

 

Schedule

The student will interact with and care for patients with a variety of emotional and psychiatric problems associated with acute and chronic illnesses. During the clerkship, the student will become a front-line member of the health team. Experiences will include outpatient clinics, inpatient units, consult service, and emergency room, as well as other specialty focuses depending on the location of the clerkship.

Regular scheduled didactics will focus on the clinical skills in psychiatric health care.

 

Evaluation

Evaluation of students varies from location, but clinical evaluation by residents and attendings comprise the majority of the grade at each site. Students will be informed of exact details when assigned a psychiatry rotation site.
