improve a patient's mobility and function. The rehabilitation team includes
physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, physicians,
nurses, respiratory therapists, case managers and nutritionists.
Students on this rotation will include and introduction to the care
of patients with disabilities due to strokes, brain injury, movement
disorders and a wide variety of other, primarily neurologic, diagnoses.
Students will learn how to prevent and manage complications of illnesses
and injuries that can limit function. In addition, the student will observe
and learn how to and when it is appropriate to prescribe therapies for
their patients. Students will begin to learn how to evaluate a patient's
function, what hospital and community resources are available to patient's
and caregivers, and learn about the Physiatric approach to patient care.
This rotation is an ideal introduction to the field of PM&R both
for students interested in PM&R as a career and for those who want
to increase their understanding of the field and learn how to help patients
with disabilities.
Students are welcome to attend the daily PM&R didactic lecture series,
anatomy prosections, and other educational experiences for the PM&R
residents. There are no night, weekend or call responsibilities.

stays such as joint contractures, pressure sores and deconditioning.

your patients. Learn how to write a therapy prescription
- To begin to learn to assess inpatients and determine their rehabilitation
needs.
- To learn about the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
and the types of patients and disease processes that physiatrists
treat.
