Course Description: The Emergency Medicine Elective is an exciting rotation through a busy Emergency Department servicing 100,000 patients per year. Students participating in this rotation will be working one to one with Emergency Medicine Boarded faculty and clinicians. The faculty at CRMH is dedicated to providing an excellent educational experience for medical students. Under direct supervision, students will be exposed to a broad variety of acute illnesses and will develop the skills necessary to provide care for the acutely ill or injured patient. Students will learn how to follow a patient through the entire visit, from evaluating the undifferentiated patient, generating a differential diagnosis, and deriving a treatment plan and appropriate disposition.

During the 4 week rotation, students will work 140 clinical hours in a variety of shifts, including day, evening and overnight shifts in both the adult and pediatric Emergency Departments. The curriculum will be very hands-on. Students will participate in approximately 4 hours per week of skills stations, including resuscitation, procedures, ultrasound, and simulation. Each student will act as "team leader" during one of several simulated case scenarios, with the opportunity to do what most students haven't yet had the chance to do - make and implement actual patient care decisions from start to finish! In addition students will be responsible for the completion of a number of online learning modules as a supplement to the hands-on curriculum. Assessment is based on performance on the National EM M4 Exam, clinical evaluations, case-based assessment and completion of online modules.
