Available: This elective is not available to visiting students through the University of Virginia

Time to Report: 7:30 am

Place to Report: Gastroenterology Lab, Fairfax Hospital

Typical day: 7:30 am - 4:30 pm

Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.

  • Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
  • Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview between November 1 and February 1.
    • Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service.

This is considered an away elective and requires an Application for Away Electives.

Course Description: The goal of the elective is to provide an opportunity to the student for exposure to both office-based (out-patient) and hospital-based (in-patient) practice of gastroenterology. We have 6 adult and 5 pediatric specialists who treat all aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology including liver transplantation. There will be an opportunity to observe and learn about various modalities including endoscopy, colonoscopy, therapeutic and diagnostic ERCP, liver biopsy, esophageal and anal manometry, pH monitoring, liver biopsy and instruction in GI x-ray interpretation.
