Operational Emergency Medicine - Fairfax

Duration: Maximum 4 weeks, Minimum 4 weeks

Prerequisite: Must complete a four-week general emergency medicine rotation

Available: To be arranged with JoBeth Eichorn.

This elective is not available to visiting students through the University of Virginia

Time to report: TBA by email from JoBeth about one week prior to beginning date – mandatory orientation will be during 1st week of rotation according to Dr. Kenders’ schedule. You will also be notified by Alyssa Thurman, the student services coordinator in the Dean’s office for the VCU School of Medicine Inova Fairfax Campus (703-776-2729).

Place to report: Report to Alyssa Thurman in the Dean’s Office, Claude Moore Building-Inova Campus. Complete the paperwork and get an ID badge. You will be escorted to the Emergency Department.

Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.

  • Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
  • Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview between November 1 and February 1.
    • Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service.

Number of students per rotation: 1

This is considered an away elective and requires an Application for Away Electives.

Course Description:
Operational Emergency Medicine is an advanced elective designed for the fourth year student who has completed a general emergency medicine rotation and whose interests take him/her more deeply into the operations of the specialty. Students will spend time with three emergency medicine physicians who have added expertise, interests, and responsibilities in the areas of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Disaster Planning and Bioterrorism, medical flight services, and law enforcement operations medical support. The student will work one-on-one with these physicians, attending administrative meetings, participating in disaster planning sessions, participating in some tactical training and evaluation of paramedics, participating in EMS and helicopter ride-alongs. A specific project for research may be assigned in any of the areas.


Objectives: To understand the role of the emergency medicine physician

  • in participating in and directing Emergency Medicine Services
  • in disaster planning and management and Bioterrorism
  • in participation and direction of medical flight services
  • as liaison with police services in training (EMS & flight).
