to visiting students through the University of Virginia
Time to report: TBA by email from JoBeth about one
week prior to beginning date – mandatory orientation
will be during 1st week of rotation according to Dr. Kenders’ schedule.
You will also be notified by Alyssa Thurman, the student services coordinator
in the Dean’s
office for the VCU School of Medicine Inova Fairfax Campus (703-776-2729).
Place to report: Report to Alyssa Thurman in the Dean’s
Office, Claude Moore Building-Inova Campus. Complete the
paperwork
and get an ID badge. You will be escorted to the Emergency Department.
Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.
- Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact
Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
- Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview
between November 1 and February 1.
- Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service.

This is considered an away elective and requires an Application
for Away Electives.
Course Description: Operational Emergency Medicine is an advanced
elective designed for the fourth year student who has completed a general
emergency medicine rotation and whose interests take him/her more deeply
into the operations of the specialty. Students will spend time with three
emergency medicine physicians who have added expertise, interests, and
responsibilities in the areas of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Disaster
Planning and Bioterrorism, medical flight services, and law enforcement
operations medical support. The student will
work one-on-one with these physicians, attending administrative meetings,
participating in disaster planning sessions, participating in some tactical
training and evaluation of paramedics, participating in EMS and helicopter
ride-alongs. A specific project for research may be assigned in any of
the areas.
Objectives: To understand the role of the emergency medicine physician
- in
participating in and directing Emergency Medicine Services
- in disaster
planning and management and Bioterrorism
- in participation and direction
of medical flight services
- as liaison with police services in training
(EMS & flight).
