Course Description: The Fairfax Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine is the largest emergency department and only Level I trauma center in the Northern Virginia area. It is comprised of the Hospital Emergency Department and three ACCESS facilities (Ambulatory Care Center/Emergency Service System), free-standing extensions of the Department located in Reston, Fairfax, and Springfield, Virginia and treats in excess of 154,000 patients yearly combined. There is a separate Pediatric Emergency Section within the main Emergency Department (approximately 23,000 pediatric patients are seen yearly). It is staffed by a full-time Department Chair and 75 full-time physicians specializing in emergency medicine and 14 who specialize in pediatric emergency medicine. Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children has pediatric specialists who are used as consultants and for referrals. There is also a Pediatric Emergency Fellowship Program. A four-week elective is offered in which the student will evaluate and treat a representative cross-section of the emergency medical problems presenting to a large active suburban medical facility. The Emergency Department staff will act as preceptors to the student while on duty and will discuss approach and management of each individual case. The approach to the pediatric patients presenting with all types of injuries, multiple trauma, surgical and medical illnesses is stressed with emphasis on a pertinent history, exam, and diagnostic studies. The development of the student’s proficiency in practical applications of emergency medicine, such as suturing technique, is assured by the large patient volume. Students will participate in direct patient evaluation, oral presentations, development of treatment plans and written history and physicals. They will also attend ED grand rounds and other conferences, some of which are required.
