ACE - A. I. in Vascular Surgery

Elective Number: 3015 (arranged)

Rotation Supervisors: Dr. Nancy Harthun and Chief Vascular Resident

Evaluation should be given to: Attending on service

Duration: Maximum 6 weeks, Minimum 3 weeks

Typical day: 6:00 am - 6:00 pm

Attendance: A student may not take time off during an ACE.

Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.

  • Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
  • Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview between November 1 and February 1.
    • Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service. 

Suggested preparatory reading: Hallett, Jr. Brewster, D and Rasmussen, T, 2001- Handbook of Patient Care in Vascular Diseases, 4th Ed.

Number of students per rotation: 2

Course Description: The student in this experience will participate in all activities of the Vascular Service, including the Operating Room, Vascular Clinics where they will learn the decision-making process for vascular patients, reading of arteriograms and learning how special procedures are performed on these patients, and learning the pre and post-operative care for the patients in the hospital. The student will interact with the Vascular Resident as well as the General Surgery Residents assigned to this service. The student will be expected to share nighttime call every third or fourth night. Visiting students should follow the directions in their acceptance email to schedule MIS and CARECAST training.
