Typical day: 6:30 am - days work is completed and evening rounds concluded
Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.
- Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must
contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
- Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to
interview between November 1 and February 1.
- Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on
Service.

Course Description: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
is intended to provide an introduction to the specialty of
Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. The student will be exposed
to all facets of this specialty offered by our Department. The
student will rotate on each of the 3 teams during the 4 week
elective. The student will participate fully in the clinic, including
clinical outpatient evaluations and preoperative assessments and
counseling. The students will be expected to observe and participate
in surgical cases to include inpatient care and clinic follow-up.
Attendance at all departmental conferences and journal clubs is
required. Supervision and teaching will be done by the attending and
resident staff of the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck
Surgery.
This is an arranged elective. Early in the academic year,
preference will be given to those students considering a career in
Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. This elective is open to
visiting students by special arrangement with the Office for Student
Affairs and the rotation supervisor. Visiting students should
complete the Visiting
Student Application and
send it with a transcript and a letter of support from
a member of
the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery or the
Department of Surgery of their school. Visiting student applications
will not be considered without this information. Visiting students
should follow the directions in their acceptance email to schedule MIS and CareCast
training.
Upon the completion of the elective, the student should have a
good understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of common head and
neck disorders as well as indications for referral and specialized
evaluation. This elective should also help the student decide whether
he/she would like to pursue a career in Otolaryngology Head and Neck
Surgery.
