The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) was founded just over 100 years ago to improve the quality of American Medical Education. It now includes in its membership all of the U.S. and Canadian medical schools and 404 of the major teaching hospitals. An important area of activity recently has been federal liaison, especially in the areas of federal funding of medical schools and student financial assistance programs. The AAMC provides testimony and consultation upon request to Congress, the President's staff, members of the Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Institute of Health. (see AAMC web site)

Because the constituency of the AAMC is extraordinarily large and diverse, its governance is unusually complex. The three groups of greatest interest to medical students are the Group on Student Affairs (GSA), the Group on Medical Education (GME) and the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR). The GSA is composed of medical school admission, financial aid, and student affairs deans and directors. The GME is composed of individuals designated by the medical schools and teaching hospitals with responsibilities in research and institutional resource development. The OSR was established in 1968 when the AAMC Assembly passed a resolution calling for student participation in the affairs of the AAMC. Student representatives from the medical schools constitute the OSR.

Each fall the AAMC holds a national meeting and a Southern Regional Meeting each spring. UVA is represented by the Dean or Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions, and the student representative.

The student representative is elected every year from the rising second-year class to serve a two-year term, the second year of the term shall be as an alternate.
