Policy Regarding Gifts to Medical Students

 

Several drug companies have established programs of giving gifts of instruments and instructional material to undergraduate medical students.

It is the belief of the administration of the University of Virginia School of Medicine that the student should view these gifts as donations to medical education and that the student should in no way feel obligated to companies which provide them. The policies governing student gift programs are as follows:

  1. Gifts are distributed only to students who wish to receive them. A student may decline to receive any or all gifts. Items that students do not wish to receive may be returned to the Office for Student Affairs or to the drug companies themselves. 
  2. Student mailing lists are not available to any private organization and, with the exception of certain periodicals and institutions offering literature on residency programs, no direct general distribution of any materials is permitted.
