PDA Software
The "Must Have" packages at UVa:
Essential Evidence Plus
A searchable collection of evidence-based medicine resources and reference tools. Used in the Family Medicine clerkship, and useful in many ambulatory care settings. Installation can be tricky, but the tools are worth it. It includes 5 Minute Clinical Consult. Licensed by UVa for all medical students.
M-Business Client
The Mobile Business Client is a customized version of AvantGo which downloads web pages onto your PDA for offline use. You can use this for our collection of 300+ Reference Cards, and for logging your patients in all clerkships. Licensed by UVa for all clerks.
ePocrates Essentials
The ePocrates free drug reference is recommended by most attending and resident PDA users. The UVa library has licensed the more extensive ePocrates Essentials for our medical students, which includes disease and symptom references. You will be initially prompted to login with your HSC credentials from the link above.
How about other useful software?
Everybody has their favorites. One we recommend is the freeware FileZ, the file manager that Palm forgot. It allows you to find, move, delete and beam files easily. If you are going to keep patient information on your Palm, UVa's HIPAA policy is that you must secure your handheld with TealLock, which locks down and encrypts your data. Some of our PDA savvy third years recommend the Merck Manual for PDA, Shots, and Diagnosaurus. The American Medical Student Association PDA page is a good starting point for what other students have found useful. Our Health Sciences Library's PDA Resource site has descriptions and links to a long list of useful PDA medical software. USBMIS publishes the popular "First Aid" series of clerkship references, and a lot of other medical reference texts. These cost about the same as the books, but are a lot easier to carry in your pocket.
