WiFi @ the UVa Medical Center
iPod Touch & iPhone

Most of the medical school and  medical center is covered by wireless networking. ITC provides WiFi in the library, Jordan and the research buildings. HSCS provides WiFi in the clinics and hospital. Here we give you the tips on how to configure your wireless device and get on the net.

Registering | ITS | HSCS

Registering Your Device

Before you can use any WiFi device, laptop, PDA or WiFi enabled smart phone, you have to register the MAC address with ITS. The MAC address is a unique number that identifies a WiFi device.

Follow the instructions from ITS for registering an iPod Touch or iPhone.

Connecting to ITC's Cavalier & Wahoo WiFi Networks

ITC maintains two wireless networks throughout the SOM classrooms and labs: Cavalier and Wahoo. Cavalier is a secure encrypted network, and requires a secure certificate. When you first connect to ITC's wifi network it will step you through the process to register your device and install a secure certificate. You can use the "hidden" Wahoo wireless network without a secure certificate, but registration is still required. Follow the instructions from ITS to connect to either network.

Connecting to the HSCS WiFi Networks

HSCS maintains multiple WiFi networks. With your personally owned devices you can connect to two: HSCS-PDA and HSCS-Guest. Using HSCS-PDA is the easiest. Here are the steps:

  1. Email the HSCS Help Desk to get the password for HSCS-PDA
  2. Go to an area covered by the HSCS-PDA network, such as the hospital cafeteria.
  3. Tap on "Settings" then then "Wi-Fi" and make sure WiFi is turned "on".
  4. You will see a list of visible WiFi networks. Tap "HSCS-PDA".
  5. In the window that pops open put in the password you received from the HSCS Help Desk and tap connect.

Your device will automatically connect to this network when it is within range, and saves your password. When you enter an area covered by this network it may take up to 30 seconds for the Internet connection to be fully functional. The one limitation of this network is that you cannot connect to UVA clinical systems, but all reference systems, web sites and email will work.

The HSCS Guest WiFi network is available throughout the clinical areas of the hospital and clinics. You must first register your MAC address, as described above. To perform the setup below you must be in a clinical area where this network is installed.

  1. Go to an area with HSCS-Guest coverage, such as the main hospital cafeteria.
  2. Tap on "Settings" then then "Wi-Fi" and make sure WiFi is turned "on".
  3. Select the "hscs-guest" network from the list of available networks.
  4. Open your web browser. It will automatically default to the hscs-guest login page. Put in your UVa userid and HSCS password. Once you are authenticated you will be able to use any network application. Note that you must authenticate through your web browser before you can access Email or other Internet based applications.
  5. Your iPod/iPhone will be disconnected after 10 minutes of network inactivity due to HSCS security policies. You must open a web browser and authenticate again to begin using the hscs-guest network.
