A Case Scenario - Lessons Learned

The evaluation process is a key component of community-based teaching. I am sure you were able to identify several areas in the previous scenario that, if addressed, might have avoided this uncomfortable situation. Some of these may have included the following:

  • Preceptor and student did not not discuss the student's goals at the beginning of the rotation.
  • Preceptor and student did not review the evaluation forms and discuss the areas in which the student will be evaluated.
  • Time was not set-aside during the rotation to discuss the student's progress and any concerns.
  • Preceptor was not familiar with the evaluation form.
  • Time was not set-aside at the end of the rotation to discuss the student's evaluation.
  • The student was not asked to self-evaluate as part of the evaluation process.
