Functional Abnormalities of the Esophagus

Chagas' Disease

Chagas' disease is due to infection by Typanosoma cruzi, which occurs primarily in South America. The disease is characterized by destruction of the myenteric plexus of the gastrointestinal tract. In the esophagus, the abnormalities encountered in Chagas' are identical to those in achalasia (i.e. esophageal dilatation with aperistalsis)
