Femoral Hernia

Femoral hernias occur much more commonly in women. These hernias occur below the inguinal ligament and medial to the femoral vein. Interestingly, femoral hernias are three times more common on the right side than the left. Omentum or loops of bowel may protrude through the hernia. It is important that femoral hernias are repaired because they are much more prone to incarceration or strangulation than are inguinal hernias. Diagnosis is often achieved by CT because these hernias are difficult to palpate.
