 Modalities of Liver Imaging

Nuclear Medicine

  • Not routinely used to evaluate liver disease

  • Technetium 99m-labeled red blood cell single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) can be helpful in evaluation of possible hemangioma larger than 2 cm.

  • Sulfur colloid liver-spleen imaging can be used to confirm a lesion that contains Kupffer cells as in focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH).  Hepatic adenoma and hepatocellular carcinoma do not contain Kupffer cells, thus will be "cold" on this study.
