Prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate gland, manifests as pelvic or perineal pain, or irritation with micturition or ejaculation. Different forms include acute prostatitis, chronic prostatitis, and prostatodynia. It is usually due to infection by gram negative bacteria.

Acute prostatitis may be evaluated with transrectal sonography, demonstrating an enlarged, diffusely hypoechoic gland, with an irregular or thickened capsule. Solitary or diffuse prostatic calculi may also be present.
