COMMON TEACHING MISTAKES

Mistake 4: Criticize the Student's Personality, Not Behavior - e.g. You Write the Comment, "Student Was Shy."

Alternatives:

Consider the following personality versus behavior based comments:

Lazy vs. Not here when needed
Unmotivated vs. Does not volunteer when asked
Incompetent vs. Does not know subject
Passive aggressive vs. Does not carry out assigned tasks
Defensive vs. Does not accept criticism

When providing feedback, it is important to identify behaviors that students can affect.

Your tasks:

Pick a period (preferably at least a few days) that you have students with you and consider the following:

Have you discussed the feedback process with students so it is expected?

How often did you provide students feedback?

Reflect on the quality of the feedback you provided (whether written or verbal). Was it specific, focused on behaviors, timely, based on decisions and actions, based on first hand information, etc.?

Think about how you might improve the quality of your feedback.
