Handbook > Academics & Counseling > Registration

Medical students are registered in the fall and spring along with all University of Virginia students according to procedures specified by the University Registrar. Financial and Student Health blocks may prevent students from being registered by the School of Medicine.

All medical students must have health insurance coverage (either under your name or under your parents' program). Student Health does not cover hospitalization, x-rays, lab tests, etc. and you are financially liable. Call Student Health (924-1525) if you have questions or need insurance.

Medical students interested in taking Summer Research between their first and second years must register for the Summer Session (434-924-5200). They need to be fully enrolled in the spring to be eligible to participate.

Students returning from another degree program (Ph.D. or Masters in Public Health) after their third year must register for Clinical Medicine in the Summer Session (434-924-5200).
