Coronary Care Inpatient Service

Report to: Attending/Fellow on Coronary Care Unit

Time to Report: 7:30 am

Place to Report: Coronary Care Unit 4th floor UVA Hospital

Typical Day: 7:30 am - 5:00 pm

Number of students per rotation: 1

Course Description: Each student will be assigned to an individual intern/resident team and will follow the same call schedule (every other day or night shift) as that team. Students will perform admission workups on selected patients admitted to the service, present to the attending physician, write daily progress notes, present follow up, and participate in all aspects of patient care. Students will gain experience with state-of-the-art management of acute cardiac emergencies. Physical examination skills and rapid interpretation of EKGs are emphasized, and students will be introduced to additional cardiac studies such as echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, and electrophysiology studies. All medical students taking Cardiology Electives will be added as users to www.uvarealm.com, the Cardiovascular Division's educational website.

Learning Objectives:
1. Presentation of acute/emergent cardiac disease
2. Initial evaluation of acute cardiac disease
3. Rapid interpretation of the electrocardiogram
4. Physical diagnosis of cardiac disease
5. Management of severe cardiac disease including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, and arrhythmias
6. Cardiac resuscitation
