Course Goals: Learn management of arrhythmias and improve ECG reading skills.
Topics of study: Diagnosis and management of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias; Medication therapy for arrhythmias; Indications for pacemakers, defibrillators, and electrophysiology studies; Interpretation of basic and complex ECGs.
Course Description: Each student will work directly with the fellow and attending assigned to this service. Students will evaluate patients who require electrophysiology consultation and present to the attending physician. The student will also participate in pacemaker and defibrillator interrogations, drug loading, and elective cardioversions as supervised by the fellow and attending. Students will gain experience with state-of-the-art management of arrhythmias. The complete interpretation of ECGs is emphasized.
Students are encouraged to attend any of the CV Division lectures and conferences (notified by email weekly), including Cardiology Grand Rounds on Mondays from 7-8 am (Sept 15 – June) and Cath Conference on Fridays from 7-8 am, at locations noted in email. In particular, they should attend Electophysiology Group Conference Thursdays, from 7-8 am in the CVRC Classroom, MR5, room 1005 and the CV Fellow’s noon time ECG/Arrythmia related conference held on the second through fourth Thursdays of every month in the Blue Ridge conference room (4th floor hospital expansion-thru walkway from 4 East of UVa Hospital).
