Primary Care Sports Medicine

Duration: 4 weeks (except R11b & 14b - which are two weeks only)

Available: 2, 7, 8, 9, 11b, 12 & 14b

Typical day: 8:00 am - 4/4:30 pm

Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.

  • Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
  • Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview between November 1 and February 1.
    • Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service.

Course Description: This elective will concentrate on the primary care management of athletes as well as non-operative musculoskeletal care in active individuals. Emphasis will be placed on development of physical exam skills, appreciation of common musculoskeletal disorders, and exposure to a wide variety of primary care sports medicine conditions. Students work directly with a number of sports medicine providers including primary care, orthopaedics, and physical medicine & rehabilitation, each with different clinical experiences. Clinical time will be split each week between primary care sports medicine and orthopaedics. A small amount of rotation time is generally available for interviews, Board review or independent study. UVA sports coverage MAY be a part of the experience but is not guaranteed.
