Lynchburg Program Description

The Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency Program is a community-based, fully accredited, solo program located in Lynchburg, Virginia. The program is under the direction of Dr. David S. Gregory, Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Director of the Residency. There are seven full-time Family Medicine faculty, one full-time pediatrician, one full-time internist, one full-time psychologist, one part-time pharmacist and one full-time Ob/GYN faculty.

The Residency operates a 14,000 square foot outpatient office in Lynchburg and a satellite rural office in Big Island, 18 miles north, near the Blue Ridge Parkway. It uses Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist Hospitals with a combined capacity of over 600 beds for its inpatient teaching. The hospitals are five minutes apart. The joint medical staff includes approximately 300 physicians in all specialties and houses an extensive medical library.

Conferences are held every Wednesday afternoon involving a broad range of topics with many local or university speakers in addition to weekly inpatient and ambulatory care rounds and monthly obstetrical and Clinical Pathology conferences.

Lynchburg is 65 miles south of Charlottesville with a metropolitan area of 65,000 people with a referral area of over 200,000. A wide variety of industries are found in the area known also for its five colleges and for its historical and tourist appeal. Outdoor and athletic activities abound as well.

At the present time the residency program offers two elective options which can be structured to meet the specific needs of the student. Room can be arranged if enough notice can be given.
