This elective is not available to visiting students through the University of Virginia.

This is considered an away elective and requires an Application for Away Electives.

Time to Report: 8:30 am

Place to Report: Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency Office, 2323 Memorial Ave., Ste. 10, Lynchburg VA 24501.

Housing: Room is free, but needs to be scheduled

Typical Day: 6:00 am - 6:00 pm

Attendance: A student may not take time off during this rotation.

Number of students per rotation: 1 (if housing is available)

Course Description: This is a fourth year medical student externship that involves working with an active in-hospital family medicine service. It is done under the supervision of the Lynchburg Family Medicine Faculty and senior residents. The student will be involved in the management of a wide spectrum of inpatient and emergency room patients. This externship rotation includes seeing and evaluating patients for admission and management in the third busiest emergency room in Virginia. There will be weekend rounds, but no night or weekend call.

Objectives: The student should expect to learn:

  • To elicit a complete history and perform a detailed physical exam.
  • To accurately organize and record data in the patient's medical record.
  • To demonstrate cost-effective ordering of laboratory and radiological studies.
  • To expand the differential diagnosis after review of data.
  • To diagnose and treat a variety of medical problems.
  • To show compassion, sensitivity and respect toward the patient and family.
