Typical day: Teaching typically occurs Monday – Thursday
(1-5pm). Other sessions may be scheduled at additional times.

Goal: To provide fourth year medical students an opportunity
to hone their skills as clinical educators.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
• Role-play a clinical case.
• Help guide pre-clinical medical students in generating a differential
• Summarize the main teaching points of a case-based discussion.
• Teach history taking and communication skills to pre-clinical medical
• Teach physical examination skills to pre-clinical medical students.
• Develop curricular material for a pre-clinical skills course.
Students participating in this elective rotation will attend CPD small
group sessions Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Each CPD
small group consists of six second year medical students and one physician
mentor. Responsibilities of the fourth year students will include role-playing
cases, facilitating discussion, teaching physical examination, and
helping students prepare for the fall Objective Structured Clinical
Examination (OSCE). Additional responsibilities will depend upon the
curricular material being covered in the course. Students may at times
be asked to assist with course didactics for first year medical students.
By preparing for small group sessions, students on this elective will
solidify their clinical knowledge of disorders representing a variety
of organ systems (cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, endocrine, reproductive,
and hematologic). Students will master physical exam skills by teaching
them to their juniors. Finally, students will serve as mentors to underclassmen
by modeling professionalism and collegiality.
This elective is offered as a two-week or four-week rotation. During
some elective blocks CPD only meets for one of the two weeks; fourth
year students on rotation when CPD is not in session will have alternate
responsibilities relevant to pre-clinical skills teaching (e.g., teaching
OSCE practice sessions, preparing curricular material, training for
skills teaching, etc.). This elective will accept new enrollees up
to one week
prior to the beginning of each block.
