Time to Report: 9:00 - 9:30 - PIC 2107 or Nephrology Attending on-call

Place to Report: Inpatient dialysis Unit - 3rd floor main hospital

Typical day: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.

  • Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
  • Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview between November 1 and February 1.
    • Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service.

Course Description: This elective provides exposure to all aspects of nephrology through participation in patient care, rounds and conferences. Clinical activities include initial evaluation and follow up care of nephrology patients on the inpatient consult service and nephrology clinic. Students will assume the primary nephrology consultant role, with help and oversight by a nephrology fellow and attending nephrologist.

Learning objectives emphasize the approach, evaluation and management of the following:

  • electrolyte abnormalities including sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus;
  • acid-base disturbances;
  • acute renal failure, including indications for dialysis;
  • complications of chronic renal insufficiency, including anemia and bone disease;
  • hematuria;
  • proteinuria;
  • hypertension;
  • interpretation of urinalysis and urinary sediment.
