Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.

  • Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
  • Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview between November 1 and February 1.
    • Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service.

Course Description: This Pediatric Neurology externship provides experience with both out-patients and hospitalized children with neurologic disease. Research activities are possible. The extern will work under the supervision of neurology residents and an attending pediatric neurologist. There is no night or weekend call. There are weekend rounds.

Learning Objectives:

1. To be able to diagnose and manage common neurological diseases of childhood including seizures and epilepsy, headaches, and stroke.
2. To appreciate how developmental stage of the nervous system affects the presentation of neurological diseases.
3 To develop the skills required to perform a detailed neurological examination at all ages.
4. To develop the skill of providing succinct and accurate presentations and formulations for children with neurologic conditions.
5. To develop communications/interpersonal skills and demonstrate the professionalism necessary to develop effective working relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
