Place to Report: Room G007 Core Lab Building, 112 11th Street

Typical Day: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.

  • Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
  • Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview between November 1 and February 1.
    • Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service.

Course Description: The student in this elective has the opportunity to work in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratories. The Program is flexible and can be tailored to individual interests within the general areas of traditional and molecular diagnostic microbiology.

Learning Objectives: In addition to participating in the daily laboratory rounds the student is introduced to:

1. Bacteriologic methods including blood culturing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing

2. Reading of Gram-stained smears, and to the areas of mycobacteriology, mycology, virology and parasitology.
