Course Description: This elective is designed as a subinternship for students interested in Surgical Pathology as a specialty, or alternatively, students who wish to obtain a better understanding of the examination of surgical and biopsy specimens. Working closely with the Pathology residents, the student will be assigned a portion of the specimens received by the Surgical Pathology Laboratory and will be responsible for the gross examination and review of the microscopic slides from these specimens, as well as signing out the cases with the senior staff. Students with a particular specialty interest, such as gynecologic pathology, may be assigned a predominance of specimens in that area of interest. Additionally, if interested, students may spend part of the elective on the Autopsy Service. From this rotation the student should obtain the fundamental skills of the gross and microscopic examination of a variety of specimen types, as well as an understanding of the role of Surgical Pathology in patient care.
