Course Description: The student will work side by side with the residents in the PICU. This is effectively an acting internship, and, as such, s/he will be exposed to the fundamentals of pediatric critical care. The morning lecture course includes topics such as airway management, cardiopulmonary dynamics and shock, fluid and electrolyte therapy, critical care nutrition, ethics, respiratory failure, traumatic brain injury, and acute renal failure. These lectures will be buttressed by teaching on rounds, consultation with subspecialty physicians, and exposure to patient care. There is ample time for self-education and the opportunity to contribute on rounds, through presentations, and informally in the course of patient care. There will be night call and 1-2 "long calls" plus 2 weekend days for call, but no weekend rounds.
