The Other Side: Serving Vulnerable Populations of Children and Adolescents

Attendance: Attendance at elective activities is mandatory.

  • Anyone who is ill or has a personal or family emergency must contact Student Affairs and the Attending on Service.
  • Students are allowed to take off up to 1 day per week to interview between November 1 and February 1.
    • Specific days missed must be approved by the Attending on Service.

Course Description: This is a two-week elective that will be offered once a year for students interested in developing an in-depth understanding of vulnerable pediatric populations beyond that available in the usual clinical settings of the health care system. The goal of this elective is to provide specific experiences that will increase student knowledge and understanding of vulnerable pediatric populations who have experienced significant negative experiences or behaviors that require a variety of community resources and interventions. Such educational experiences, coupled with reflection and discussion, will better prepare students to understand and to provide culturally competent care to such vulnerable populations. With faculty preceptors, students will meet in the community with patients and/or community service providers that are not routinely encountered face-to-face in the health care setting. Such experiences may include: foster care group homes for abused and neglected children; community services board serving the mentally ill; community services for handicapped adolescents and adults; juvenile court; juvenile detention center; police department; homeless shelters; sexual assault resources; gang culture; local communities with distinct cultural identities (e.g., Hispanic community, refugee communities, migrant communities, etc.); and other experiences, as available.

Course work will include 6-8 group field trips over the two-week elective with faculty leaders, Dr. Brown and Dr. Pappas, to learn about the systems that are in place to provide services, to better understand the different challenges facing various vulnerable pediatric populations, and to better understand how to collaborate and coordinate care with these other systems in order to better care for patients and their families. Readings specific to each trip will be assigned. Other sessions will be set aside for reflection and discussion. Each student will be expected to prepare a reflective writing essay based on at least one of their experiences and how it relates to the care of vulnerable populations.

Course Content:

  1. Students will participate with faculty leaders in 6-8 group field trips over the two-week elective in order to learn about the systems that are in place to provide services, to better understand the different challenges facing various vulnerable pediatric populations, and to better understand how to collaborate and coordinate care with these other systems in order to better care for patients and their families.
  2. Students will participate with faculty leaders in 2-4 didactic and discussion sessions.
  3. Students will complete assigned readings in preparation for the class sessions as assigned.
  4. Students will complete a reflective essay on at least one of their experiences during the elective.
  5. Class will meet daily Monday through Friday and full participation is expected.

Goals and Objectives:

  1. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of specific vulnerable populations of children and adolescents who have experienced significant negative experiences or behaviors that require a variety of community resources and interventions.
  2. Students will better understand the concept of culturally competent care and how to provide such care to vulnerable populations.
  3. Students will develop increased knowledge of the social, economic, ethical, and legal context of specific vulnerable populations and how this may impact health care delivery.
  4. Students will develop an increased knowledge of community service systems that provide significant health and social services beyond that provided within the traditional health system.
  5. Experience with vulnerable populations will aid students in the development of professional attitudes, including humanism, compassion, and empathy.
