Health Policy Externship

Elective Number: (arranged) 2803

Rotation Supervisor: Carolyn Long Engelhard, MPA

Duration: Maximum: 4 weeks; Minimum 2 weeks (4 weeks preferred)

Available: Rotations 1, 2a, 6b, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14a

Attendance: A student may not take time off during this rotation.

Number of students per rotation: 4

Course Description: This is mainly a directed readings elective in which students will:

  • Attend weekly seminar in on-going health policy course (PHS 7100)
  • Attend and present a journal article of choice in weekly journal club
  • Attend/share in GME health policy rotation activities as available
  • Attend state health policy meetings if scheduled/available
  • Write a 2-3 page reflection paper on student selected reading, due last day of elective (2 week)
  • Write a health policy research paper, topic chosen by student, due last day of elective (4 week)

Students will meet with the elective supervisor at the end of the externship for a final report of their work.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the access, coverage, cost and quality issues in the US health care system
  • Identify the elements of insurance coverage, both private and public
  • Describe the many ways physicians influence the delivery of health care
  • Be albe to understand the terminology of health policy and health politics
