SO, WHAT NOW? Sneak Preview of Coming Attractions


83% of the class has fully or partially registered with the NRMP at this point. If you are among those who have not, please take a minute and do this promptly! The deadline is November 30. There are several functions that must be completed by the Dean's Office, and these cannot be started until the entire fourth year class has registered or confirming that specific individuals are verified as not a graduate of the class of 2015.


Students will enter rank order lists using the NRMP web site from January 15 to February 25, 2015. If you still haven't registered with the NRMP, please do so before November 30 to avoid a $50 late registration fee.

The NRMP has released a report entitled Impact of Length of Rank Order List on Match Results on their web site. Take a look! You can rank up to 20 programs for your $65 fee - couples can rank up to 30 programs. Longer lists have a better chance of matching according to the NRMP. Word of caution -- do not rank a program where you do not want to go!

Please contact Ginny Atwell or Dr. Allison Innes regarding your match results. You may also need to withdraw from the NRMP Match.

TO WITHDRAW FROM THE NRMP MATCH: Please contact Ginny to withdraw. Be sure to check with your program on exactly what to do (PGY-1 is the issue). Some programs include the PGY-1 year and some only reserve it for you -- but to secure the PGY-1 position you have to rank it with the NRMP.

As we are an AAMC affiliated school, completion of this questionnaire is a "must do"! This is the school's way of finding out what you, the students, think the strengths and weaknesses are throughout the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and your anonymous feedback can and does help shape the future. But more on that to come.

Monday, March 16th at 12 noon EST:

Applicant Status (matched/unmatched) information, AND filled and unfilled results for individual programs will be posted to the NRMP web site. Locations of all unfilled positions are released at 12:00 noon eastern time only to participants eligible for the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP).

Wednesday, March 18th Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) offer rounds begin at 12:00 noon eastern time.

Thursday, March 19th Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) offers.

Friday, March 20th at 12 noon EST: Match Day ceremony in the McLeod Hall Nursing Auditorium. Specific results (where you matched) will be posted to the NRMP web site at 1:00 p.m. EST. Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) concludes at 5:00 p.m. eastern time.

Note: SOAP-eligible unmatched applicants shall initiate contact with the directors of unfilled programs only through ERAS. Other individuals or entities shall not initiate contact on behalf of any SOAP-eligible unmatched applicant prior to contact from directors of unfilled programs. Such contact is a violation of the Match Participation Agreement. Contact between programs and matched applicants prior to the general announcement of 2014 Match results at 1:00 p.m. eastern time Friday, March 20, 2015 also is a violation of the Match Participation Agreement.

Interview Tool

The AMA has developed a residency program interview and evaluation tool. It is a great thing to help prepare you for interviews and to help you compare all of the programs you visit. Take a minute and visit their web site. It can be a helpful tool for remembering specific details about a program well after you have finished interviewing. It could be an enormous help when it comes time to submit your rank order list.

  If you cannot take your USMLE Step 2 CK and CS exams by December 30th you will be classified as eligible for August graduation. Reminder - only students on the list for May graduation can participate in the NRMP match.

HOST Program









Consider staying with U.Va. medical alumni hosts during your residency interviews!

Keep the UVA Medical Alumni Association’s Host Program in mind as you start to receive your residency interview schedule. The Host Program is a great opportunity for you to connect with UVA medical alumni and former housestaff who are offering such things as free accommodations, meals, transportation and information on residency programs while you are traveling to their hometown for your interviews. Cap & Gown Order - DUE DECEMBER 30!

Students must order their own cap & gown for graduation, for which the School of Medicine will pay.

Hoods have already been ordered in bulk for each student. Please go to the Jostens web site, available now.

Do not sign-in. Select Graduation Caps & Gowns, then Student Medical School Rental.



1. In your SIS Student Center, select “Apply for Graduation” from the “Other Academic . . .” drop down box.
2. On the following page, “Select Program and Degree”, choose the Academic Program(s) from which you are graduating.
3. On the next page, choose the appropriate term and click “Continue”.
4. On the “Verify Graduation Data” page, review the degree information and the name that will appear on your diploma.
5. a. If both the degree information and your name are correct, click on the “Submit Application” button. You have now completed the SIS graduation application.
5. b. If you want an alternate name to appear on your diploma, click the “Edit” button to the right of the “Primary” and/or “Diploma” name. You will be taken to a Names page where you can add, edit, or delete a diploma name. Once you are satisfied with how your name will appear, select Apply for Graduation again to complete the application process (steps 1-5.a.).

(If you are legally changing your name, you will need to show your legal documentation to Alane Celli to make the change since your Diploma is considered in the health profession as a licensing document).
