Vital Signs Medical Student Performance Evaluation* (M.S.P.E.)

Each student will have a Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) written for them. The letter DOES NOT mention the area of medicine to which you are applying nor your reasons for interest in that area. Often, students will change their plans during the application and match process, so the letter is kept “generic”. It provides the personal academic history of the student. Your advisor or College Dean are available to discuss these things with you to keep apprised of where you are in the decision-making process and to offer help and/or encouragement in choosing a specialty.

The format of the letter includes:

  • Unique Characteristics
  • Academic History
  • Medical Education
  • Clinical clerkships: grades and written descriptions of your performance as summarized in your evaluations.
  • Summary: Provides a summative assessment, of the student's comparative performance, relative to his/her peers in medical school, including information about school-specific categories used in differentiating among levels of student performance.
