Letters of Recommendation

ERAS-Specific Guidelines for Letters of Recommendation:

** Please ask your letter writers to HOLD your letter until you send them the Eras Letter Request Form, after you register with Eras.

Eras Method: For each letter author you create in Eras, select "Step 3". Select "Letter Request Form". This creates a physician/student specific Eras Letter ID number. Letter writers or assistants will upload them directly into Eras. You can email this form or submit by hard copy to the letter author.

Procedure for Uploading LOR's:

LOR Portal User Guide for letter writers new to this procedure.

*You are responsible for checking the status of which letters have been uploaded by faculty or received by Student Affairs.

General Guidelines for Letters of Recommendation:

You are responsible for obtaining 3 faculty letters of recommendation.

  • At least 1 should be from a faculty member in the discipline to which you are applying.
  • Be sure to check with the office of the faculty writing your letters to ensure that your letters have been sent.
  • The Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) is a must for all programs and NOT counted as a faculty LOR..
  • Some programs require a letter from the department chair.
  • Other letters should be written by faculty members who know you well and can comment in detail on your personal qualities. They should have interacted with you sufficiently so that they can provide specific information concerning your cognitive knowledge, commitment, and work habits. At least one should be in your specialty area.
  • DO NOT submit more letters than requested by the individual program.
  • DO NOT solicit letters from residents. Although they may know you well, their recommendations will not be as influential as those of faculty members.
  • When soliciting letters, provide the faculty members with copies of your CV, personal statement and grades for the clinical rotations. Inform the faculty members of any special issues that you wish to have them address. Letters must be dated in the current year.
  • For EARLY MATCH programs, follow the specific guidelines required by your specialty program.
  • Be certain to provide faculty members with special forms that programs may require.
  • Most programs only accept 3 letters.

Letters can be transmitted online anytime once you have registered.

NRMP Agreement & Fee

The online applicant registration will open September 15th.

The fee will be $70 this year, so you can factor that into your financial planning.

The AAMC ID that you received for your AMCAS will be your ID for ERAS. You will create a new one for the NRMP. After you login and register with the two respective sites, they will confirm that this is your ID and that you will use it as your logon hence forth. Please make a note of it and your passwords and keep them someplace safe.

Important: The NRMP requires that each medical school certify participants as being potential graduates. You cannot participate in the Match unless you are certified. To be certified you need to take both USMLE Step 2 CK and CS by November 1st. If you haven't scheduled your exams do so now!

Criteria for Graduation

Students must take both USMLE Step 2 CK and CS after completing all core clerkships and before November 1st of their fourth year in order to remain on the May graduation list and in order to participate in NRMP match. Students must pass USMLE Step 2 CK. Passing USMLE Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills) is required for licensure, but not for graduation.

USMLE Step 1 & Step 2 (CK&CS)

To assist students with travel costs for the Clinical Skills Exam, the AAMC has negotiated a special rate for examinees at hotels within close proximity of each of the exam sites. Please note that some of the hotels have listed blackout dates during which the negotiated rates are not applicable.

Most of the hotels provide transportation for examinees to and from the airports/hotels (transportation reservations may be required in advance). The rates are applicable through November 1, 2017.
