Inpatient Hematology Oncology Selective

Course Description: Students will be part of an admitting team with an intern and resident. Students will work up and present inpatient Hematology/Oncology patients and follow those patients on the service. Students will be on call every 3rd day, including weekends. Call will end at 8 pm on call days and will not include overnight stay in the hospital. Students will attend lectures and conferences during the rotation with the medicine residents. Students will gain experience with all aspects of inpatient hematology and oncology including acute leukemia, febrile neutropenia, chemotherapy administration and treatment of complications of chemotherapy.

  • Evaluation and management of acute leukemia
  • Evaluation and management of febrile neutropenia
  • Indications for bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
  • Evaluation and management of complications of solid tumors and chemotherapy
  • Indications and complications of blood product transfusions.
