Course Description: Students will make rounds with the hematology consult fellow and attending physician each day, Monday through Friday. Students will work up and present inpatient Hematology consults and follow those patients on the service. When time allows, students will participate in outpatient hematology clinics. Students will attend lectures and conferences during the rotation and will participate in the Leukemia/Lymphoma tumor board and hematolpathology conference. Students will gain experience with all aspects of inpatient hematology consultation including cytopenias, hemostasis and thrombosis and evaluation of suspected hematologic malignancy.

Learning Objectives:

  • evaluation and management of common hematologic issues: anemia, thrombocytopenia, coagulopathy and thrombosis
  • pre and perioperative management of patients at high risk for thromboembolic disease
  • indications for bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
  • evaluation and initial management of suspected leukemia, lymphoma and multiplemyeloma
  • evaluation of peripheral blood smears and bone marrow aspirates
